Hi Mike,
I think every grower has his own quirks on how they handle
this. I do several special things at the leaf junction with
the female. First I mound up the soil under the vine so that
the vine at the female is about 6 inches higher than the
surrounding soil. I pinch of any side vine growing at this
junction.
I also kink the vine toward the fruit when the vine is still
very young. You can clearly see this in the early shots on the
web cam. This is to help prevent the shoulders of the fruit
snapping the vine off as the fruit matures.
I also bury the vine at the fruit to encourage rooting at this
site. I'll leave this root as long as possible. Since I have
the fruit already elevated 6 inches, I can keep this root for
quite a while. If the fruit gets really big I usually end up
having to cut roots up and down the primary vine and down the
nearby secondaries. I sometimes also have to remove the
adjacent secondaries. As the shoulders of the fruit grow they
push into the main vine and the only solution is to wack
secondaries to cut it some slack.
Hope this helps.
