bug?

I found a large red bug flying around my plants this afternoon. Elongated red body, red head and blackish wings. It seemed to be flying around depositing something on the underside of stalks. Is this one of the dreaded SVB bugs or something else?

I didn't want to take any chances so I squashed it.
