RE: Odd Pumpkin Shape and Color

Man,
I'm glad I asked the question. You guys really gave me some good answers!
First, if necessary, I will enter in the squash weigh-off, because
Delaware's Pumpkin contest Rule # 4 states: "To be eligible for the heaviest
pumpkin, the specimen must be a minimum of 75% white to cream-yellow to
orange in color. All others will be considered squash. Like I said earlier,
mine or light-green (actually pale green, very pale).

I'd also like to thank David and Katie for the seed offers. I will be
contacting you at the end of the Season.

Philip

Hello,

I'm a first time pumpkin grower. I purchased a package of "Dill's Giant
Atlantic" seeds and have grown a pretty big vine with 3, one week-old
pumpkins.

However, they don't look anything like the pumpkins I'm use to seeing.
Instead of being round and orange, they are long and light-green. They look
like giant "Butternut Squash.

Is this how "baby" Giant Atlantics look, or am I wasting my time
cultivating
squash?

Normally if it starts green it will stay green, but you can not be 100%
sure
of that. If you don't have more plants I would keep it what you learn can
be applied to next year. AG's should be pale yellow from the start then
turn
a darker color when they mature. Your area may have a contest for Giant
Squash also. All AG's have Squash in them way back in their ancestry and
you can
get a throw back.
