Kathie,
It's not too late to set a pumpkin here in California. Still
75 to 80 days to Elk Grove and more to Salinas.
If you want to grow a really big pumpkin, forget the side
vines... Especially, the early side vines. These just won't
have the follow through even though they can start real fast.
I would set a pumpkin on the main asap. Cull the early side
vine immediatly and leave the best of the three on the late
secondary as a backup for now. As soon as you are sure you
have a good set on the main, cull the back up on the side vine.
I cringe each time I have to cull a nice looking fruit on a
side vine so I stopped setting them entirely....
