Re: shade cloths and misters

Charles,
Make sure you put some fungicide on any wounds from the geese and keep them dry...that is the other thing the tarp tents help with...keeping the fruit dry...so make sure you set it up for the water to run away from the pumpkin :-)...if they do get muddy from rain accidently...I'd wash them off with 1 part bleach and 20 parts water....using a sponge to clean them....this will kill off harmful things to your pumpkin's skin.
Good luck with the 736 Bhaskaran and 759.5 Bhaskaran. :-)
As for "Does Stem Size Matter" :-), not sure...I have had some huge stems only go at 18lbs a day yet others with small stems move 25lbs a day...so I don't know a correlation.
My 670 Daigle doesn't have a huge stem(approx..6" long 2" thick)...I'd say medium size and it is really cranking! 181 lbs last week and the first 2 days of this week 87 lbs!
Take care,

Thanks David,

Well, once again the 906 Tanner has jumped out to a big lead over your 759.5,
but last year it overtook the Tanner and became the best plant in my patch. I
am also growing your 736 and it currently has the largest fruit on it, but I
am worried about 3 things: 1. the diameter of the main stem is small, 2. the
heat, and 3. I think the wild geese have been pecking on the fruit. Hopefully
the shade construction will take care of the last 2 problems. Does the main
stem diameter correlate with fruit size?

Thanks again, Charles.

  Howdy Charles,
As for pumpkin protection, as I mentioned in an early post...I use a tarp
tent of 6x8 tarps...so that only indirect sunlight gets through. The hot
sun
will start the ripening process early..even if it is only hitting a few
spots.
As for Misters and such, don't use any of those..even though we are going
through some mid-90s temp up in MN! I normally just insure the ground
stays
moist(ie...drop .5" of water 30 ft around plant)...also mulching with
grass
clippings will help beat the heat also.
Good luck and I know you guys are a lot hotter than we.

Temp in mid 90's again today! What is everyone doing for heat stress?
What
are the shade cloths made of? How much light does it block out/allow
  through?
What misters are you using? Continuous or intermittent? Anyone who has a
great system, please share with me your ideas. Thanks, Charles in
