Bitrex is designed to taste horrible, not to kill stuff.
Among other uses, Bitrex is prescribed the world over as a thumb sucking
preventive by pediatricians. In the case of many insect baits, Bitrex is
added to keep children from chewing on the bait case were it found within
their grasp. Bitrex is also found in some Deer repellents where it is only
marginally effective.
When used as directed no harm should come to earthworms.
As an interesting aside; a friend worked in a deer repellent factory where
they used Bitrex. Because it isn't very dangerous folks who worked there
would occasionally get some into their mouths via casual hand contact.
Bitrex straight up onto the tongue results in amusing facial contortions but
nothing more.
The antidote? Chocolate. Every desk had a bowl of Hershey Kisses.

Also, to go along with Jasons concern: when we use these synthetic chemicals
to kill the bad bugs- how exactly does it effect the worm population that is
present? I used an Ortho product that contains Bitrex for the snails slugs,
and other various insects and after I put it around the base of the pumpkin-
I thought what about my lovely worms? Anyone know?
