Re: Pumpkins at the stem

Hi Kathie!

A year or two ago I had a "male-female combo" flower. It had an actual female bulb on a LONG stem like we would normally associate with a male flower. Inside, it had both male and female parts. I did take pictures... I need to see if I can find them (not easy, since I changed computers and the photos are all on disk somewhere...).

So, these weird flowers do exist. I saw in a Holland video that Lincoln Mettler had something like this as well.

Strange things are par for the course, at least for me. I just had a siamese female in my patch. I'll post it to my blog:

Regards, Cliff

Subject: Pumpkins at the stem

This morning I removed two pumpkins growing from the stem. Aside from long buried memories of wanting when I was that age to be "where the boys are," I can't figure out why I have females there.

Is this a strange plant?

Am I a bad grower?

Does this happen all the time and nobody talks about it?

Or what?
