Pumpkins at the stem

This morning I removed two pumpkins growing from the stem. Aside from long buried memories of wanting when I was that age to be "where the boys are," I can't figure out why I have females there.
Is this a strange plant? Am I a bad grower? Does this happen all the time and nobody talks about it? Or what? --------------------------------------------------------------------- Pumpkin-growing archives: http://www.hort.net/lists/pumpkins/ To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE PUMPKINS
