Kathie, all kinds of strange mutant stuff happens at the stump (base of stem)...I try and keep a 12" to 18" circle clear of any oddities around the base(stump) air flow is a good thing!!! No to all three, #1...already answered, #2...If you got so far as to see the oddities...you gotta be growin good stuff!!! #3...Not all the time, and yes folks do talk about it!!! Might be hard to find the conversations using search functions...but we do chat about abnormalities!!! Hope this helps!!! Peace, Wayne

This morning I removed two pumpkins growing from the stem. Aside from long buried memories of wanting when I was that age to be "where the boys are," I can't figure out why I have females there.Is this a strange plant? Am I a bad grower?
