RE: Pumpkins DIGEST V1 #68

Kathie is right, styrofoam works. Make vine/fruit movements in the heat of
the day when vegetation is pliable.

Jim,

You didn't say how large these fruits are.

Unless they are both over 80 pounds, there may be small things you can do to
level the playing field between your pumpkins and ours.

Do them slowly:

In the heat of the day, move your pumpkin a little bit away from its vine.
Just a little.

If you do this slowly, you can also maybe slightly change the pumpkin's
axis, tilting it a bit more horizontal. Maybe. Carefully.

Next day, repeat.

David and I use chunks of styrofoam to hold the vine away from the fruit.

If you have not already done so, sever the roots at the vine nodes closest
to the fruit so as to enable the vine to rise as high as it must to
accommodate a prizewinning pumpkin.

Keep us posted.

Kathie
