Here is another less destructive but completely off-label & therefore
illegal chemical treatment I've used:
Merit 75WSP: 1 tsp per gallon in a watering can
OR
Better & faster: Safari 20SG 1 tsp per gallon in a watering can
Add a very small quantity of soluble fertilizer to enhance translocation
then drench the vine & leaves before & after the grub. Safari kills them in
minutes. Merit might take a day or two.
Obviously the resulting fruit cannot be used for consumption nor sold due
worker re-entry interval & days to harvest laws. Beats cutting the vine open
regardless.

If you don't have anything to lose, I have done the following. Slit the
vine lenghth wise with a sharp knife about a foot and a half from the base.
You will see the Devil's Spawn grubs as you go. Pick em out or lance them
with the knife. Bury the vine with WET soil. It may root for you and keep
them going long enough to count. If they die, they die. They are going to
anyway if infected with SVB.
Next year spray from the 1st week in June until August 7.
Don't worry, I've had it happen to me my first year.

Hi Everybody,
Rolled a couple of mine over for better position, luckily no stem snapping
problems yet. More of the SVB vine death problem though. I guess I sprayed
too late but I still keep hoping they'll come back.
I did have the perfect imprint of a 'possum bite on one of the big ones, and
a Racoon scrape on one of the other big ones out back. Not a real problem
yet but I do have a no-kill trap in case relocation is necessary. Otherwise
my better half's Grandmother (past on last year at the ripe old age of 100,
God rest her soul) passed down a good racoon and possum recipe. I did
remember her saying that 'Possum was a little greasy though. She's also got
a good recipe for Groundhog in case anybody's interested.
I've got to check the huntin' season on all those. I suspect I'm outta luck
unless I want a fine (or a possible divorce.) I could stand the fine, but
divorce I'm not to keen on.
Actually- just kidding about the hunting part (not the divorce part) but
Grams did pass the recipes down for future generations.
It seems the Racoons have been busy trying to get the birdseed out of the
feeder- an unintended distraction away from the AG's. I might have to use
this method more to my advantage.
I DO need to get some tarps over mine. I've been working out of town and
haven't got them placed yet. The weather's been unseasonably cool in St.
Louis so I've been lucky but August may shape up to be a little warmer??
Thanks everybody for all the good tips for us newbies,
Rich Briggs in St. Louis
