Re: vine burying

Steve, I have another question for you. You mentioned that well watered plants will wilt severely during the absorption lag
(heat of the day), then appear to recover. This is normal right? Or is this caused by the SVB's?

Debbie

Debbie, just bury the vine at the nodes. I believe there needs to be some
vine exposed for respiration. The purpose of burying the vines is to promote
rooting at the nodes for more H2O take up. SVB needs an exposed vine base in
order to bore into the plant. If you keep up on your pesticide schedule the
adult moth will keep off of the leaves. You are right. Once SVB grubs are in
the vine, they are toast. The good news is that in N. Illinois, the life
cycle of laying adults should be over in @2 to 3 weeks. SVB is obvious once
you have it. Well watered plants will wilt severely during the absorption
lag (heat of the day), then appear to recover. Keep spraying and trapping.
I'll bet your traps start to catch fewer and fewer moths as July progresses.
Good Luck!

I was wondering if all of the vines are to be buried. If there is a SVB
larvae in the vine and the vine is buried, you would never see see it or
know where it is to extract it. Of course if it is in the vine I would
imagine that it would be too late anyway.

I have caught 35 SVB's so far in the trap.
