watering

I was reading on BP about watering and how much water to use.  As I mentioned, I water using a hand wand attached to a garden hose.  Based on what I was reading, I should be putting down alot more water than I am.  What is the proper way to water to insure a good watering? (that will not remove most of the soils I used to cover nodes)

I was reading about drip irrigation, but that is not possible for me.  Automatic misters or sprayers are also not an option at this time.
