RE: Females

Yes. Open the most mature ones at the time. If they have pollen, it will
work.

I do have males, but they are in various stages of growing. Do you mean
that I
can take a 'nearly opened' male and use that?

Steve, guess you need to move closer to me. LOL

You probably have male flowers (unless you are pinching them) that will be
there in a day or two. Even if you have to peel back the petals to get to
the stamen. The plus is if they are closed the pollen will be dry. Most
healthy vines will have at least one male flower at each node. If you lived
near me you could have a bucket full of mine.

Ok. I have a female that should open in the next day or so. I just put in
4
two-foot stakes around her with plywood on top. My problem is that I won't
have
a male ready on either plant. Is there any way that I can either slow the
female from opening or speed up the male?

Debbie,

I saw female flowers at the ends of my main vines today in the patch. From
experience, I figure 5-7 days before they will be ready for pollination
(open). Just a heads up for you as I bet you start to see them soon as well.
Look at the unfolding ends of the vines for the small yellow "bulbs". Those
will be your female flowers as they mature.

Good Luck!

P.S. As you do this more and more, you will be able to predict the morning
of blossom opening!
