Man Vines

I am growing 3 A.G. plants. All three of them have strange looking main
vines that are different from any other I've seen.

Where the main vine comes out of the ground, it has totally flattened out.
This happened within a day or two of being put in the ground. They were
germinated indoors in peat pots, then moved outdoors a month or so ago. I
know, I'm running late this year.

Anyhow, a day or two after being put in the ground, I came out one morning
to see what I first thought was slug/snail damage to the top of the main
vine. Instead of being the normal round vine, it looked like a piece of
celery, flat with a sort of indentation in the middle. I though it had been
eaten.

A day or so later, plant number 2 did the same thing, but a close inspection
shows that it was not eaten, it's just gone flat. A third plant did the
same thing.

This only occurs on the main vines. The rest of the vines all look great,
big and fat and growing like crazy.
Anyone know why this happens? My vines last year did not do it at all.

Thanks,

Jim
