Hi,
I called a local heavy weight grower in my area the other night to ask if I
could borrow some male blossoms, if he had any open.
I had two females that were just about ready to open and only a couple of
males that were questionable.
The guy tells me I am not allowed to come over to his patch because all I
want to do is spy on him and his plants. That no body is allowed over to
his property that is a pumpkin grower!
I thought to myself, well if the guys last name was Zehr he has a point,
but it is not.
To make a long conversation short he told me to pollinate my females with
butternut squash, I said what about my seeds I may want to try replanting
them next season, he said throw them away nobody is going to want your
seeds anyway. I said I don't really care if nobody else wants them I may
want to replant them. He said just throw them away and go find other seeds.
Now I just don't happen to have any butternut squash planted this year but
I asked a lady down the street who has a large garden if she did.
And she does.
I did not use her butternut squash to pollinate, rather I opted for two
males that had not quite opened all the way on one female and let the other
female go.
My question is, if you are in a pickle will butternut squash (specifically)
cross with an AG?
I know we talked about this last year and I thought I saved the note but I
can not find it in my files.
Thanks!
