We lost a friend today. I didn't know him . . . but share a kinship with
him . . . of sorts. Charles Kuralt was a North Carolina native . . . when
he was a teen-ager, he worked at the radio station (WBT) where John (Mr.
Hancock) now does afternoon drive. He wrote for the Charlotte News (now the
Charlotte Observer / www.charlotte.com) before moving on and up. On one of
his travels to Colorado (Estes Park), he happened to stop at an inn owned by
John's Dad . . . John says they stayed up half the
night . . . just talking about this and that. I work at the sister TV
station to WBT . . . WBTV . . . it was difficult for our female anchor to
deliver the news of his passing on the noon show today.
He was the kind of newsman who would have written about our pumpkins. There
is a daffodil named after him. Read the book "Charles Kuralt's America . .
. you'll want to visit all those cities.
Happy Fourth of July! My plants are baking . . . they all have a yellowish
cast to them. Be careful with your fireworks tonight!
