a first time pumpkin patch

Last year I had a normal garden, but I did have some zuchinni that got to
be a good size and so I became obsessed with growing large vegetables. I
then decided to by some giant seeds. I purchased giant pumpkin, giant
squash and giant kholorabi. I planted them this spring in the house and
transferred them to the garden with the highest hopes that I would have
to hire a backhoe to remove them this fall. Much to my dismay two days
later when I was at a wedding in another town it began to snow quite
heavily. I drove home as fast as visibility would allow me and put every
old sheet and blanket over them that I could muster up. I saved most of
them from an icy grave and had to keep them covered for about a week.(My
wife was ready to leave me due to my rather cantankerous mood)Things have
improved and I think I am on my way. I started pollinating what I
thought were my pumpkins and I was very excited, but then I was told
through this group that I was probably pollinating my squash. Oh well.
In the past couple of days I have pollinated two pumpkins. I also have
about 7 or 8 squash pollinated and they are growing an inch in
circumference every day which has me very happy. The largest squash is
now about 20 inches in circumference. I am waiting for the pumpkins to
take off, but I wonder how much they can grow before october when growing
usually ceases up here in Canada due to snow. I hope a lot. I find it
extremely interesting to listen to the experiences of everyone else in
this group although I do often curse you growers in the states who seem
to have a far superior growing season. I am jealous. I apoligize fro my
long wided email, but I thought that I would let you all know what it is
like in Alberta, Canada. It is raining right now and about 67f.
Bye for now
Sean from Alberta
