Folks,

Hello, I'm new to this list and I have no pretense about growing
competition class pumpkins. I just want to have a rather large
jack-o-lantern for Halloween--one that's two big for the kids to steal
and smash. I've already picked up some helpful hints from this group.
Thanks!

As to what sizes peoples pumpkin's are, I'd like to comment. I live near
San Jose, California so obviously my growing season is a lot longer and
my plant was in the ground in April. I already had and lost one due to
splitting by the end of June that was about 100 lbs. I don't know if it
was over-fertilized or over-watered or genetic, but since this is my
first attempt, it was rather disappointing. Fortunately, I had my
backup plant which, for yucks, I planted in the compost pile. It now
has a pumpkin on it that is about two feet in diameter and therefore
probably about 72 inches in circumference. Not 100 inches yet, but soon
I hope if I can prevent a repeat of what happened to the other one.

I look forward to hearing everyone else's progress!

John
