Calcium Nitrate

Can someone give me some facts regarding calcium nitrate. I recently talked
with another local grower who asked me if I was using it on my pumpkins. I
understand its use while preparing the soil prior to planting to balance
the nutrients. But they told me that they were using it in water soluble
form to increase the thickness of the pumpkin wall and thus the weight. But
what didn't make sense was that he said that he only had a 2" wall on a
250# pumpkin. I cut open the split pumpkin that I removed and examined the
inside for curiosity. And the wall was 2.25" thick and it only weighted
14.5#. So my questions are:
1) Is the 2" wall on a 250# correct? My novice opinion after looking at my
split pumpkin is that this guy didn't have very good genetics.
2) Does anyone supplement with calcium nitrate during the growing season in
general, and more specifically for the reason of increasing wall thickness?
Thanks, Jim
