Recently I noticed one of my plants completely stopped growing but retained
all its good color and healthy looking vines. I was perplexed-no sign of
wilt, no signs of a virus,no (obvious) fungus, no sign of borers. Nothing
at all. So I buried every possible vine, and the tap roots really took off.
The growth of the vine came back only to an inch or less a day. Well last
night I had enough of it and pulled it out--and to my suprise it came out
of the ground like nothing-- the main roots had completely rotted away!
What could have caused this? I haven't't watered it alot, nor have we had
alot of rain and temps have been normal. I'm surprised that the tap were
enough to keep the plant alive, it had about 100 leaves.
But on a more positive note I examined the inside of the vines
before I destroyed them and found no sign of borers! Chances are that
since this plant didn't have any them my other healty plants won't either?
or at least not alot of them?(all were sprayed with sevin) But what are
the chances of the root fungus spreading to other plants. They are still
averaging 6-8" a day.NO signs of rot yet.
