Re: Wayne, Al Eaton, slings and sand

Beth, I remember a post last year about someone having and AG vine
climb a tree and set a pumpkin. If I remember correctly it grew an
elongated stem and fruit them fell apart. I don't recall how large it
got. I think it may be OK to have a fruit set there and eventually grow
down to the ground. Those guys have certainly done a lot of
experimenting haven't they. I for one am greatful they have shared
their experiences with us. In the past I have used a small piece of
plastic like those blue tarps under my bonsai version of AG's and it
worked out well. This year however I intend to put the tarps over the
pumpkins as shade protection. It should also keep the soil dry
underneath so the pumpkins will be on dry ground. I also plan to use
some black landscape fabric that is used for keeping weeds from coming
up underneath the pumpkins. We'll see how it works out. I like the
idea of the sling for a round bottom but how do you keep it from rolling
around in the back of the truck when you haul it from the garden? Good
luck.
