Scott-
sometimes these plants are hard to figure out- one thing i know is that
they can be hardy. have you had your soil checked ? if the 750 with
lots of fertilzer took off then maybe your other spot is
under-nurished/fertilzed.
BUT... be careful !!!... i have heard lots of stories (on this list)
where people have over fertilized and gotten big plants and what in the
begining looked like a nice pumpkin only to have the pumpkin split or
explode. in many cases slow and steady wins the race. we want to push
our plants and pumpkins to the limit - but don't know where that is
-yet once the line is crossed it is too late.

I know yesterday i was talking about genetics, and what characteristics
are derived from the male, and what characteristics come from the female
in seed production, but strange things are happening in my patch. I
started out with 5 young seedlings, and eventually narrowed it down to
2. they were pretty similiar, but came from different plants, dill's
715, and dills 750. I wasn't sure which to grow and which to cull, so,
i gave Howard a call, and he said "grow the 715". So, that's what i had
planned to do. However, i couldn't bear the thought of kiling my 750
after the 5-7 leaf stage, so instead i dug it up, and transplanted it!!
i know this is nuts, but i figured, why not, it's worth a shot. I
ripped apart all sorts of roots on this thing, and after
transplantation, i figured it was a gonner. It looked like garbage,
wilted leaves, faded color, but, i left it alone. I watered the living
daylights out of it, i mean like taking the hose and just lettin' it
flow. I fertilized the daylights out of it. I didn't use any
insecticides. Just out of curiosity of course. This thing is now
taking off like you wouldn't believe! The leaves look great, and i just
tried to set a perfect looking fruit on it this morning, 90 degree
angle, long stem and everything. the only thing is that the leaf count
is a little short, but i'll let it grow a little more before i pinch off
the ends. Meanwhile, the 715 has recieved the red-carpet treatment, has
a great leaf count, long healthy, thick vines, but, the females on this
plant are really little, compared to my "experiment" plant. I mean
they're growing and all, but the other plant seemed to do it quicker. I
just don't get it, i literrally did all the things you're not supposed
to do to this one plant, and things are looking pretty well, (all things
considered), and the other plant, i followed all the rules, and it's
taking it's sweet time. What's the deal here?
