Hello Group!
Let me get this out of the way first. I'm a first
time grower located in east central Alabama.
Thanks to Joe mills (SPGA) and Jim Kunde
for the seeds. The plants growing right now
are: 1 Castellucci 743.2, 2 Castellucci 410's,
1 Kunde 380, 6 plants are Weeks Seed Co.
AG's, 1 North Carolina Giant (also from Weeks),
and 3 Howdons. I say I won't try to kill myself
next year by trying to grow this many, but just
watch. I'll go nuts again next year just like I did
this year! Now, questions:
1. Does the AG's have just ONE main vine or many
mains?
(The biggest plant right now has what looks
like 2 mains heading north in some sort of race.
The secondaries are going wild and I try to keep
them untangled with those tertiary things grabbing
everything in sight.)
2. If I didn't get to hand pollinate a female and it
appears to be growing a nice little pumpkin, do
I assume that the bees did their thing O.K?
(I managed to hand pollinate the first 2 females
and they are looking good, but so are the other 3
that I didn't pollinate. My patch is not located at
my home and I can only be there in the VERY
EARLY mornings and afternoons and weekends
to do the tending.)
3. Can I do away with some of the secondaries
and tertiaries once I have a good fruit set to channel
that growing energy to the pumpkin?
(Some of the secondaries also have pumpkins on
them. What do I do about those?)
Please advise. These plants amaze me. I also gave
each of the 4 biggest ones 2 gallons apiece of some
12-55-6 liquid fertilizer to up the flower count, and boy,
did that do the trick!
Thanks!
Scott Parsons
