Brian, Often the first flowers to appear on the plant will all be
males. They are the ones with the long stems. The females tend to
appear a bit later and farther out on the main and secondary vines.
These have the little fuzzy yellow ball or oval under the blossom and
much shorter and thicker stems. Give it time.
