There has been a lot of talk about pollination. I was wondering how many
pollen particles a single male flower has and how many particles are required
to completely pollinate say a five segment female blossom?

Marv,
I am by no means a pollination expert, but I do know that one pollen grain
matches up with one ovule in the female. I would guess that a good hand
pollination deposits 10s of thousands of pollen grains all over the segments
of the female,...maybe more. But if you end up with 600 viable seeds in the
mature female, I would have to say 600 pollen grains made a successful voyage
to the female ovules. Much like there are millions of sperms and only one
makes it to the egg. The more pollen deposited on the female, the better,
however. To achieve the best pollination, get out early, keep temps below 90
degrees, if it is raining, cover the female so the blossom doesn' flood with
water.
