Re: Vine pruning
Duncan,
I use a pair of rounded tip surgical scissors to snip the curly-que( I'll
leave that technical term to you guys) near the side vine and carefully
cut the growing bud of the tertiary vine. I have found that if I let
tertiary vines get 2" long and snip them close to the vine they don't
shoot a jumper vine later in the season. One year I didn't get all of the
growing buds and I chased jumpers all season.
In my travels to other growers patches, I have seen everything from
totally buried vine to no vine buried at all both with good sized
pumpkins.
In our patch, we bury the main vine and one vine out of the back of the
plant, usually the secondary main, and encourage all the side vines on
them to grow trimming the tertiary vines from the side vines. We dig a
small ditch under the vine about 2" to 3" being careful not to dig up
small feeder roots. Place the vine in the ditch cover with moist soil and
gently water down the freshly buried vine to encourage the vine roots to
grow.
