Steve's update!

Well, the only AG's I have growing now are the 550 Cramer 96 and a 618
Wallace!
(In the same hill).
The 627.5 Hester got eaten by a gopher (or rabbit), as you all know by now!
(Still waiting for a replacement seed)!
The 1006x941 Brock, I planed 2 of the 3 seeds I had after soaking overnight,
etc. Neither germinated. I removed them from the hill a few days ago and
placed in a moist paper towel just for the heck of it. I squeezed one today,
and stuff shot out of it like a zit. And it smelled nasty. So, well, I have
one more seed to try! Everybody cross your fingers! I hear people badmouthing
this seed, but I don;t care, uit;s genetic history sounds SO good, at least it
is worth growing for crossing, riiiiiiiiiight? Come on, someone say SOMETHING
good about this seed! ARGH.

Anyway, between the Cramer and Wallace, I noticed a yellowing between some
veins on one leaf on the Cramer. I was told that this might be magnesium
deficiency, and if it was, it might be due to a phosphorous overload (the soil
is VERY rich, and wood chips have been composted there by the ton). I sprayed
with a foliar spray of epsom salt solution on both of the plants. Also I got a
Rapitest soil testing kit to test the levels of NPK. It is really weird that
there could be ANY nutrient problem, since I thought that adding compost
ALWAYS corrected anything like that, whether it was too much of something, or
too little. Compost is supposed to buffer everything, I thought! So this is
really weird.
Anyway between the Cramer and Wallace, I figure I will have to remove the
Cramer, there is a BIG difference in the growth, the Wallace is way ahead!
Plus there was no yellowing between the veins. Only thing that happened to the
Wallace is that the cuke beetles seem to like it more. They ate a lot of holes
in it, even though I had it dusted with all purpose dust including Sevin, AND
had it covered with floating row cover. Weird. I hope it doesn't get wilt or
something. (Knowing my luck).
Strangely enough, the BEST pumpkin plants I have growing are Burpee
Prizewinners!
They are taking off like crazy, the leaves are at least 18 inches-2 feet
across already, and they haven't even started to vine yet!
Oh well, I guess that's all I have to post right now. Any comments??????????
More advice? Good recipies for fudge?????????? Write back!
