you experienced growers. How do you pollinate a pumpkin plant, and why and
 when would you need to?

David,
Most growers hand pollinate to insure enough male pollen is deposited on
the female. Or to cross one specific male with a female for genetic reasons.
The male flower is on a long stem. The female is on a shorter stem and has a
baby pumpkin on it. The males usually come first. When you see a female open
first thing in the morning, gather a few male flowers and strip the flower
petals off the male. Gently rub the center of the male flower on the center
lobes of the female to transfer pollen. That's it.
