Heres what i think Carla....and I have never grown pumpkins in a container
before......................if you decide to leave them in a container
definetly one per pot.........you might try half in pots and  and half in
ground if possible.......... because you can tranplant pumpkins
successfully..give them lots of water and maybe "super thrive" or Dr
Scholls plant food..... but they don't like their roots disturbed...... but
they also dont' like to be root bound in a pot.....pumpkins like water and
i have a hard time keeping pots watered....but maybe you don't.......you'll
never know unless you try...but if putting them in the ground is possible
i would do that.............................two cents worth ....MB
