Re: Rookie needs help

Hi Rookies,
I have never tried to grow pumpkins in containers but , I'll try to give
you advice as to what I would do if I were to try it.
Think it is great that you are trying the project with your daughter. I
have a 3 year old and we have had a great time growing together , last year
and this.
First take the time to read as much af the info on the pumpkin web page
as posible.
http://www.athenet.net/~dang/pumpkins.html
Second I would carfully place alot of large pots of soil under the
vines on your deck and bury them at the leaf junctions to promote root
development there. The more roots you have the bigger and better the
pumpkins .
It's pretty common to have more males than female flowers.
The flowers only last a few days so I wouldn't worry about them to much.
If some thing is eating your leaves then that can be a problem to address.
When you get a female flower you should hand pollinate it . The females
have the baby pumpkin at the base , the male has no fruit just a flower.
Protect your female!!! From birds bugs what ever may harm her.
Wish you the best of luck with the project. If it doesn't work maybe
you could try bottle gourds they could hang from deck railings to grow, and
come in fun shapes. There is a gourd link on the pumpkin web page.
Hope this helps.Ta Ta 4 Now,
Pumpkin Flower PS( Tell your wife I think,
she has already found her prince. He is out on the deck trying to grow
pumpkins with your child . )
