Rookie needs help

Pumpkin Mentors,

I've started a project with my daughter to grow her very own pumpkins.
Unfortunately, we live in the city so my only choice was to grow it in a big
pot and let the vines spread all over my deck. The plant looks very healthy so
far using my regular watering and fertilizing techniques used on other potted
plants. It gets full sun except for the late afternoon. Here are our "rookie"
questions:

1) Can we be successful growing a pumpkin this way? So far, the plant looks
very happy. Any tips?

2) We don't know the variety of the plant. It was given to us as an
unidentified seedling. Is there anyway to tell how big the pumpkins will be
from the size of the blossoms or any other clue?

3) We have had only 1 female blossom out of about 30. Is this normal?

4) Here's the big one! Something is eating our blossoms. I think it's birds,
but it could be racoons. I thought it was birds because they were not eating
the cut off blossom. Now it appears that the blossom is being eaten (for the
most part). Any ideas of how to find out what it is or to stop it? I'm trying
the aluminum pie tin method of scaring off birds and so far so good. My next
thought was cheese cloth, but I wanted to check with experts first.

My wife like to know how to turn a pumpkin into a carraige, but we'll start
with the easier questions first. Thanks for the tips. This is fun!
