1)  pumpkins will abort at that size for "who knows why" - but for sure
due to heat, was it hot when this happened?    I don't think it was a
fungus problem, when they turned pale that was just the sign that they
were aborting- they just didn't "take".  if it was hot then you can try
to cool them down. there was some talk about this within the group, in
June i think.
