John- I have a couple of wierd things like this. Once last year, like yours- a fruit didn't ever set, and this year in one of my first flowers- it looked like a 1/2 female and 1/2 male from the outside, I cut it off. it was also in a bad spot in the garden. I hope your children are safe. Gordon Tanner Maple Valley WA >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This AM I broke off a sturdy male to pollinate a fresh female. When I took off the pedals I found a short pistol with about half of the usual number of rows of pollen on it, and under that two female lobes and what looked like two more lobes that were white, like the underside of normal lobes. The base of the blossom was a half globe shape, as if the flower went half way to being a female. How common is this? Will it spread? Are my children safe? I wonder if this would have self-pollinated, and what the off-spring would have been, if any. Isn't this fascinating stuff?
