growth

When does a pumpkin actually grow? i usually measure mine in the
morning, and then again in the evening. when i do this, theres no
change during the course of the day, but when i measure again the next
morning, poof, like magic it grows. so it seems that it's only growing
at night. Could someone explain how this works? i'm thinking something
about photosynthesis here, but i really want a more detailed explanation
if anyone can provide it.

Also, what would happen if i kept breeding back my pumpkin and it's
offspring over the course of a few years? would i get a pure strain of
AG? How long would this take? NOt that i'm actually going to do it,
i'm more interested in growing a bigger pumpkin every season. I'm just
curious.

thanks
