That is called powdery mildew. You can't normally eradicate it totally, BUT
you can prevent it from getting worse, so it doesn't seriously injure the
plant by applying something like a sulphur spray (sold by Ringer), or a copper
spray or dust, or something synthetic like Captan. All of these are
fungicides. When conditions for fungal disease are forcasted, it is always
good to use some sort of fungicide on your plants as a preventitive measure.
(Also use it on any part of your plant that gets damaged). Oh, and the "book"
is the second edition of Tom Langevin's "How To Grow World-Class Pumpkins", he
just came out with it. It is already in it's second printing! Well, of course
that's because the first one was smeared, but still....
