Found this information in a book titled "Bugs, Slugs, and Other Thugs".
This book gives methods to control garden pests organically. For
woodchucks, it states:
Puree and strain hot peppers and garlic. Mix with water and enough liquid
soap to help the concoction adhere. Sprayed liberally around the garden,
this mixture dampens even the hottest woodchuck appetites. A 1 percent
solution of rotenone sprayed or dusted on plants also deters them.
Other methods include sprinkling ground hot pepper or ground black pepper
near the burrow openings and near susceptible plants. Dried blood, blood
meal, and talcum powder have also been reported to repel woodchucks.
I plan to spray the hot pepper mixture on my sweet corn and pumpkin plants
to keep the deer and raccoons away. The mixture will be one tablespoon of
ground hot peppers to one gallon of water. I have been told by others that
this works. We will see......
