the last 3 years in our community plot, there was a huge problem with woodchucks.We tried poison bombs intended for killing them-didn't work. to close to houses so we couldn't shoot em. Put up a fence,it did slow em down a little, but the best thing was, an electric fence. The same kind they use to keep horses in.you can plug in or get the type on a battery. string 2 wires. 1 up about" off the ground and another maybe 4" down from the top. Just keep vegetation off the wires it will ground it out. Worked fantastic for us. Absolutely NO chucks bothered us after that.We have also been assured (especially with the battery type) that  although it is not a pleasant experience, and you must mark the fence for warning, touching the fence will not harm people(it never even seriously harmed the critters- it just deterred them and sent them to someone else's garden.)

The sight of him gives me a pain

This hairy blob has me insane

Because of him we’ve bought a fence

And he must think we’re pretty dense

To waste good money on the thing

Cause he can tunnel, chew, and sing

Now I’ll tell you what I hate the most

Bout being his unwelcome host

Is that he doesn’t even eat

My baby pumpkins in this heat

He takes a bite and spits it out !!!

It makes me want to scream and shout!!!!!!

Why he should chose "my" garden gate

To knock on when I’m growing great

No it’s not fair , not fair at all

I have concluded that such gall

Shall be rewarded in good time

I’m counting on some friends of mine

The E-mail list will solve for me

This uninvited guest quandary

I’m sure.   I hope.   They know the cure

To keep my pumpkin patch secure

Now some will say, " go get a gun"

And yes agreed that would be one

Way to the end of Mr. Wood Chuck

And my neighbors really do suck

But the road and passing cars
