I would suggest pulling up the roots instead of cutting them. This would
avoid an open cut as well as the leaking that can occur. Also tipping
your pumpkin early on towards the stem and pushing a good amount of dirt
underneath can be helpful in relieving stem stress. Pack it in good not
leaving any empty areas. Don't forget to train your pumpkin to a good
right angle to the vine early on as well, starting around the softball
size, a small amount each day. You may need a prop with cushioning to do
it. Be careful not to injure the surface. Pick the pumpkin up and sense
the stress with your hands. Back off if too much. Can snap immediately
without warning.
