This is my first year growing pumpkins, and although I haven't
started to actually measure yet (my biggest AG is baseball
sized, but on a midget plant), I've noticed the same peculiar thing,
just eyeballing them, but I thought it was my imagination.
Now you've really got me wondering.
Wait... ah, NOW I've got it...
it's the "the watched pot never boils" (WPNB) theory...
during the day, it's light out, and you can watch your pumpkins,
so they don't grow. When it's dark out, they know you can't see them, so
they grow like crazy.
