This is for all of us that are confused with measuring. ( like i was a while back) after looking over some of the old posts and researching on Duncans web page i came up with the following. best of luck to all. Gordon Tanner Maple Valley, WA There are two common ways of estimating your pumpkins weight: 1) the Circumference method 2) the Over The Top method CIRCUMFERENCE METHOD The circumference measurement is obtained by taking one measurement on the pumpkin. Not nearly as accurate as over the top but good for quick day to day gain. The Circumference measurement (c) or (circ) is the largest circumference taken parallel to the ground at approximately the stem-blossom level. Start at the stem go around the blossem end then back to the stem on the other side, stay parallel to the ground the whole way around. (Circumference is not measured under the pumpkin from side to side, which is what I thought for a while.) Take this number and raise it to the 2.61374 power then times by 0.001517. This is the estimated weight of the pumpkin. For example: a 39 inch (c) pumpkin would be 21.8 lbs a 146 inch (circ) pumpkin would be 688.7 lbs For those who don't like the math here is a table, look for your circumference measurement number in the inches column and next to it is the estimated weight. Start at the stem go around the blossem end then back to the stem on the other side, stay parallel to the ground the whole way around. (same as in the other method) 2) The Over-Top front to back measurement (fb) is from ground-to-ground over the highest point of the fruit, from steam end to blossom end. Measure from the ground below the stem up over the pumpkin past where the blossom was to the ground. The measurement must be taken straight down from the edges of the fruit. DO NOT follow the contour of the fruit to the ground. 3) The Over-Top side to side measurement (ss) is taken perpendicular to the Over-Top front to back measurement, Measure from the ground on one side up over the highest point of the fruit and down to the ground on the other side. Again the measurement must be taken straight down from the edges of the fruit. DO NOT follow the contour of the fruit to the ground. Many grower just give the three numbers like 99/58/55, or 99(c) 58(fb) 55(ss). Add all three measurements to get the OTT. Then raise the OTT to the 2.76 power and then times by 0.0000795. For example a pumpkin with circumference of 99 inches and a front to back of 58 inches and a side to side of 55 inches would have an over the top or OTT of 212 and the estimated weight would be 209 pounds. A 350 inch pumpkin would be 835.6 lbs. Again for those who don't like the math. Find the OTT number in the inches column and next to it is the estimated weight.
