Keith, Beth, Marty, all..
Thanks for your suggestions AND the moral support. It surprises me, but I
really am stressed out over the damage. And I'm pretty darn sure it is
squirrels ... although I haven't seen them tooth to vine, I have watched
them chew away at more mature pumpkins. Friends who grow in this area
also recognize the damage.
Time to put your advice to use. I'll smear the trap with peanut butter and
put up a fence with ribbons. I'm already carrying throwing rocks in my
pocket, and will buy a sling shot. I had good aim as a child. The
diversion strategy isn't working tho since a neighbor is trying it for me -
she feeds peanuts to the little darlings and I am constantly digging them
up in the yard. Perhaps they find my vines while looking for a place to
bury their bounty.
One word about traps .. Bob McLaren (not on this list) grows his Atlantic
Giants nearby, and gave up on the trapping method after capturing 45
squirrels in 3 weeks. I live in a sea of them, it seems.
Hmm... I could try setting up my misting system to run periodically from
daybreak to sunset. It may act like a scarecrow since the squirrels *seem*
to avoid it.
Here's a high tech thought... anyone know if squirrels avoid ultrasonics?
Aren't products of that sort used against gophers?
