liquid seaweed and powdery mildew

Tom-Depending on where you live can determine what type of powdery mildew you have. There are two types of powdery mildew fungi; a)Sphaerotheca fuliginea b)Erysiphe cichoracearum. You probably have Erysiphe however you might have both. Liquid seaweed has been getting recognition as a preventative for both types of powdery mildew. It should be used early in the growing year to help build up your plants natural resistance capabilities. Once the leaf has been infected with a powdery mildew fungi you can't save that leaf you can only control the spread so it does not spread. A common misconception is that free water is required for the spread of the fungi spores when in fact free water actually inhibit germination. What causes spore germination is a relative humidity of a min. of 50% and temp. over 50 degrees F. Optimum condtions increase potential of germination ie. higher humidity with higher temps. In many cases warm humid nights, with little air circulation provide excellent!

onditions for spore germination. Millions of spores can be produced on an infected leaf. To control any further spread of spores I would recommend provide good air circultion when condtions are optimum, treat with a fungicide that has been proven effective such as dinocap or benomyl. The good news regarding powdery mildew is that it is fairly easy to control once discovered.
