Dazed and confused...

Growers,
O.K., here's the scoop. Yesterday I went to the patch armed with
X-Acto knife and made small cuts in three of the mains and
found no SVB grub. On the last plant, I split the main for a distance
of 6 feet (knowing that this would probably do this baby in) and
still haven't found a larvae. I piled dirt all along the stem at the cut.
What's going on with my plants? If it isn't SVB, reckon what else
could be displaying the same symptoms...dying, watery stems...
first yellow then brown dried up crispy leaves...what could this be?
I am totally perplexed at this point and sure wish I knew what to do.
Any comments?
