It's not so much wasting energy....what you need to worry about is if the
shoulders of the pumpkin are going to grow over the vine, or run into it,
which it probably will. While you can still get at it, it might be a good
idea to prune it off close to the main vine (leave just a little stump), and
treat it with Captan paste.
The secondaries feed the fruit to a certain point. If the leaves of it are in
a lot of sun, it will probably be useful, but it is best to let another
secondary grow longer somewhere else. It will eventually become useless and a
problem when the shoulders of your pumpkin grow.
