Jane,
Shame on you. You know there are no stupid questions.
Now to answer your inquiries.
To terminate the vine growth, cut off the very end growing tip, maybe on inch
or so. Throw away the cut off part. Bury the end of the vine in about three
inches of ordinary dirt. Water the affected area.
End of problem.
Number two has many more answers. If you have wet soil and chewing critters,
you need to do something. If not, then you can just leave them on the dirt.
It is, after all their natural habitat. However, the simplest safest thing to
do is to get dome wire mesh with half inch or so spacing, cut a piece about
three feet by three feet. Put it under the pumpkn, and cover with and inch of
sand.
End of problem. Do no sip plastic under the pumpkin, since it will hold rain
and dew water, thus creating a good environment for nasty things.
Your last question is, as you said, one where opinions vary. How much of what
fertilizer is good for your plant? Who knows. To many variables. Read the
labels to find the active ingredients, read the news group, pray, etc.
So far north as you are, you have lots of light. If the weather stays warm,
you will have ideal environment.
Good luck.
John
