What causes vines to completely collapse?

Apologize if this is redundant. Am new to the listserver and didn't see
anything jump out in the archives.
2 out of 4 of my plants, just collapsed. They looked OK one day and
extremely wilted the next day or two. Within a week they were completely
gone. They just flopped. Is this caused by a fungus, insects or what?
We are in the midst of a drought with extreme heat, but the other two vines
are still holding their own at present. Had a similar experience with
zucchini squash. Any advice would be appreciated?
