Burying vines

Hi Bob,

Buring the vine helps by creating more root
structure.  If you look closely at your vine you
will notice a bump on top and one or two small
roots coming out the bottom at every leaf
junction.  When you bury the vine this bump
on top of the vine will form into a root and the
two on the bottom will also grow vigorously.

Some people do not bury the entire vine...
they put soil only over the vine at each leaf
junction. That is how I did it up until this year.
This year I have buried my vines completely,
placing the soil about one inch deep over the
top of the vine.  I try to stay within two feet of
the end of the vine, and leave it uncovered
for about 5 feet each side of a pumpkin.

I just pile it on carefully with a shovel and use
plain topsoil.  I would use compost if I had any
left.

BTW... I am in northern Vermont and the weather
sounds about the same.  (I'm working in Landaff,
NH this summer.... road construction)

Good luck,

Dan in Vermont
