split vine

last month I saw a posting were a man lost his last plant from split vine
an English fellow I believe. It frustrated me at the time not being a sub
scriber and being able to respond think we can recognize vine split early
buy looking at the leaf stems if we see a corrugated stem we should look at
the vine towards the main root for damage. the damage could be from
training vines dogs children or clumsy gardeners. he puled up his plant but
depending on the damage. he may have saved it when my main split on both
sides it went over a clump of dirt this caused the two halves to be in
contact flat and they grew together. to form a 4 inch flat section. the
vine continued to grow flat then rectangle these plants may regain
viability and in fact one of my plants last year grew with no main root it
was damaged and I cut it off it did how ever have a good secondary root
system under the leaves. I f we get along split on both sides and we catch
it early we may be able to put the clump under or hold the halves together
some other way. I may damage a secondary on purpose to se if I can mend it
and create a flat or rectangle vine. and also to test my corrugated leaf
stem theory . I think these stem variations occur wen the plant is under
stress from damage .they could indicate this damage. or beetles or slugs
early so we can respond.
