Where does the food come from?

My fellow growers,
First, I want to brag that my 2 plants made it through 109 degree weather, an
all time record here in San Jose, without a wrinkled leaf (well, one) using
only shade cloth and no misters or foggers. A tribute to the effects of wet
dirt.

But my real question is this. Where does the pumpkin fruit get it "grow and
go" from? The portion of the vine between the stump and the fruit, the
portion beyond the fruit, from the whole plant within a radius of so many
feet (or meters if you are Canadian)? The issue came up with a grower who has
two flowers within a very short distance of each other on different sides of
the vine. I told him I would seek you collective wisdom.
Glenn, the Squash Giant, says that large squash get their nutrition mainly
from the vine going to the stump. Does he have that right for pumpkins too?
